Small rant upcoming. So, I purchased a PS3 in Panama for use in Costa Rica (my other PS3 will not play NTSC encoded discs), and then purchased a couple of DVDs (The Social Network and 300). I get home and eagerly install the equipment only to discover that the DVD player is encoded to Region 4, and that it won’t play the Regiuon 1 DVDs I just purchased.

The solution?

Forget about purchasing DVDs and just download them from the Internet, install a media server (such as TVersity, or Vuze‘s own), and stream the films directly to my PS3.

Dear film industry,
Cumbersome and illogical region encoding encourages piracy.

Wait to you star seeing the classical "This video isn't available at your country because copyright restrictions" on Youtube.

PS3 Media Server is awesome and works perfectly on Linux! 🙂

Damn straight. Couldn't agree more. Most of the DVDs I like are either only available in Japan or America, and because of the region codes both on the DVDs and on my PS3, the easiest way to get what I want is to download them ILLEGALLY 🙂 What I find funny is that most people would probably gladly buy the DVDs they want, if they could watch them that is. Also, I'd like to give a BIG well done to Sony for region locking their PS3's. Well done on promoting piracy guys 😉
