The BBC reports that Iran has blocked access to Facebook. According to them, this has been done in order to make sure that followers of former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi cannot meet online and gather more support.

Does anyone remember our early dreams of a free internet? The Web would be a space free of government intervention, a self-regulated utopia of fluffy bunnies, film reviews and porn. How far have our dreams fallen when every tinpot dictator and wannabe-Bond-villain corporation feels compelled to impose filtering into the system. While firewalls and IP filtering is not perfect, it certainly works for most people. True, firewalls can be circumvented via VPN services such as Hotspotshield, but most people would not know their way into a VPN even if they were given instructions through a sat-nav device. Just like any other type of enforcement, internet regulation works for most peope, but some will always be able to get around regulation.
